COMMENT: "Tanks are rolling out, the Stones are rolling in" was the famous slogan for The Rolling Stones' historic concert in Prague on August 18, 1990. The phrase brilliantly captured the end of Soviet occupation and the birth of a new era of freedom in Czechoslovakia.
The legendary gig, which took place less than a year after the Velvet Revolution, was monumental for several reasons:
The Symbolism: The Soviet-led troops were finally pulling out of the country, while The Rolling Stones arrived for their first-ever show in the country on a government-supplied plane.
The Crowd: More than 100,000 fans packed the massive Strahov Stadium to finally experience the band live, having previously only known them through illegal bootleg tapes.
The Celebration: President Václav Havel, a long-time advocate for the underground rock scene, supported the concert and hosted the band for a private dinner at the castle.
The Impact: The band famously waived their performance fee and donated all proceeds to charities helping disabled children.
