ROLLING STONES Original Promotion Poster - 1968 Album BEGGAR's BANQUET

COMMENT: The original idea of the cover of "Beggars Banquet", which featured a graffiti-covered toilet wall, was rejected by the record company. This led to a months-long delay in the release, until a provisional invitation version was used before the original cover was finally released...years later:

Photographer Barry Feinstein and the band wanted a photo of a dingy toilet wall in a Los Angeles auto repair shop, covered in graffiti, including album credits. Record companies in the US (London Records) and the UK (Decca Records) found the design too offensive and rejected it, delaying the release.

The compromise: Instead of the toilet-themed cover, a simple white cover with the album title and an invitation (RSVP) was used, allowing the album to be released on December 6, 1968. The controversial original cover featuring the toilet wall was eventually reused on later reissues from the early 1980s onward and is now the familiar cover for most versions of the album.

The Dutch music magazine "Muziek Parade" managed to obtain a picture of the original cover for its November 1968 issue (#140) and printed it as a fan poster in the center of the magazine. The lyrics to "Beggars Banquet" and other popular songs of the time were printed on the reverse side. The headline "PLEEBOYS VAN DE MAAND" is a play on dutch-words combining "PLEBOY" (playboy) and "PLEE" (to pee), thus meaning "Peeboys of the Month."

This poster is therefore likely one of the first promotional prints of the original "Beggars Banquet" cover.
