This is the holy grail of Zappa posters!!
"I'm probably more famous for sitting on the toilet than for anything else that I do."
(FZ, Interview on Nationwide, July 1, 1983)
This poster features a photograph of Frank Zappa on the toilet, taken by Robert Davidson in Zappa's suite at the Royal Garden Hotel in Knightsbridge, England during a press reception on August 16, 1967.
The photo was taken with Zappa's consent, as it was intended to be used for publicity leading up to the Mothers first U.K. concert at the Royal Albert Hall on September 23, 1967.
Original Poster: Not long after the photography session, photographer Davidson decided to make a poster from one of his pictures of Zappa on the toilet. His favorite picture from the dozen photos he shot was the one taken from the side, so that one was chosen. He transferred the picture onto copper
printing plates, and printed up a thousand posters from it. In an effort to sell the poster, he left small quantities of these posters at poster shops in Carnaby Street, for sale or return. They turned out to be very popular.
These original printings did not have an Osiris publisher/credit line on them. All it had for a credit was "© LOON-1967" in the top left corner.
First Osiris Poster: As the poster became more popular, Davidson found a distributor for the poster in Osiris Visions. Osiris printed their name and credit information on the poster and began selling them through Osiris Visions. Along the right edge of the Osiris Visions poster, top to bottom, it reads:
"OA304 U.K. PRINTED © LOON 1967, DES DALE, FOR OSIRIS VISIONS LTD. PHOTOGRAPH: BOBBY DAVIDSON"
Second Osiris Poster: The poster was reprinted by Osiris once the initial batch of posters sold out.
Although this is the second Osiris poster, this is actually the first reprint (and the first Osiris printing of the poster). For the reprint, the "© LOON-1967" on the top left corner credit was erased, and the "PHOTOGRAPH: BOBBY DAVIDSON" part of the publication/credit line was also removed. Along the right edge of the Osiris Visions poster, top to bottom, it reads:
"OA304 U.K. PRINTED © LOON 1967, DES DALE, FOR OSIRIS VISIONS LTD."
It should be noted that this Osiris poster was not authorized by Frank Zappa and he apparently made no royalties from it. He did authorize a version of this poster with a different toilet photograph, and it had the words "Phi Zappa Krappa" at the top. It was published in 1969 by THE VISUAL THING, Inc.
Frank Zappa had this to say about the poster: "It was supposed to be used as publicity for our first concert in 1967. And the photographer who took it made a poster and sold it for his own profit. And then that poster was bootlegged all over Europe and eventually went into the United States. And millions of them were sold. But I couldn't stop them from doing that. No! Because in London,
the photographic copyright laws are different from the United States. Somebody takes a picture in the U.S., they can't make commercial use out of it without your permission. But in England, if somebody takes your picture, the photographer owns it and can do whatever he wants with it."
Bootlegs: Have different dimensions and/or different colours.
If you can't see the tiles behind FZ's back, then it's a bootleg/later reprint.
